About Selling
Before the auction

What is the first step to selling at auction?

The first step is to find out whether Simpson’s sells your type of property and how much it might be worth at auction.

How can I learn if Simpson’s sells my kind of property and its possible auction value?

There are several options, including contacting a Simpson’s location near you; emailing your inquiry to mail@simpsongalleries.com; mailing a request form for an auction estimate; contacting Simpson’s Appraisals and Valuations services; and bringing your property to our sale location. For information about bringing property, please see the following question.

Can I bring in my property for an estimate?

You can bring property to Simpson’s during business hours Monday-Friday. However, to ensure that a specialist will be available to examine your property, we strongly advise that you make an appointment. Under no circumstances should you ship property to us or leave property at Simpson’s without first discussing it with one of our specialists.

How long does it take from consignment to the auction?

To allow sufficient time for research, cataloguing and photography, each auction has a consignment deadline, or closing date. This can be discussed and announced at the time of consultation.

How much will it cost to sell property at Simpson’s?

Simpson’s operates a sliding scale of commission charges for sellers based on a client's selling activity during a year.

What is a reserve?

A reserve is the minimum price the consignor is willing to accept and below which a lot will not be sold. This amount is confidential and will only be known by the seller and the gallery.

Who sets the reserve price?

The consignor and Simpson’s specialists mutually agree on an appropriate reserve.

What is a consignment agreement?

The consignment agreement is a contract with the consignor to sell property. The consignment agreement includes Simpson’s terms and fees for services such as insurance/loss damage liability, shipping and illustration.

Who arranges the shipping of property to be sold?

After agreeing to consign property, you may choose to bring it yourself, arrange with your own shipper to deliver it to us, or request that Simpson’s specialist department help organize shipment.

After the auction

How will I learn the sale price of my property?

Soon after the auction Simpson’s mails out a post-sale notification listing the final bid price or, in the event that the property failed to sell, a notification that your property failed to reach the reserve price, or was not bid on at all.

What if my property fails to sell?

We suggest you contact the specialist in charge for advice on whether to re-offer the property or to arrange its return.

When will I receive payment?

Simpson’s sends payments to consignors approximately 35 days after each auction, assuming that purchasers have paid Simpson’s. Consignor payments are accompanied by settlement statements itemizing the commission and any other charges.
