A FOUR PIECE CANN & DUNN COIN SILVER TEA SERVICE RETAILED BY A. RUMRILL & CO., NEW YORK, NEW YORK, CIRCA 1856-1860, the monogrammed service of lobed form with chased repoussé scroll and floral decoration, a band of chased cast acanthus leaves at the base continuing into scroll bordered acanthus leaf feet, comprising a tea pot with naturalistic chased cast twig form handle fitted with insulators, scroll spout, and hinged lid fitted with melon and leaf finial, height: 8 7/8", width: 9 1/4", depth: 5 1/4"; a cream jug with naturalistic chased cast grape vine handle, everted lip with repoussé floral pendant, and hinged lid fitted with melon and leaf finial, height: 7 1/4", width: 6 1/8", depth: 4 1/8"; a sugar bowl with addorsed naturalistic chased cast grape vine handles and lid fitted with melon and leaf finial, height: 8", width: 8 1/4", depth: 5 3/8"; and an open waste bowl, height: 4", diameter: 6 1/8", all stamped to the bottom "A. RUMRILL & CO., 955, C&D (in diamond)" and two pseudo hallmarks; together with an American sterling silver tea ball with strainer basket, total approximate silver weight: 75.905 troy ounces. NOTE: "John Melmoth Dow was a shipmaster, shipping agent and naturalist. Born in New York City in 1827, he joined the Panama Railroad Company. He made his first voyage to the Central American coast in 1851, and remained involved with Central and South American coastal trade as a ship captain until 1876. He was appointed commander of the steamer Constitution in 1853, and opened the Central American service of the Panama Railroad Company as commander of the steamer Colombus. He later became a shipping agent for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. During his years as a shipping agent, Dow was captured and held hostage by revolutionist Pedro Prest án in 1885. He was arbitrator in the dispute between the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocéanique and the American Contracting and Dredging Company in their attempt to build the French Canal in Panama. Condition:
In overall good to very good condition with minor surface rubbing and scratching commensurate with age and use, the cream jug with a small pin point dent on one lower lobe, the tea pot with multiple small pin point dents.
