  • Provenance: Collection of Katherine Pitcher, Leonardtown, Maryland; Estate of Wayne Cox, Galveston, Texas, purchases from Coral Diamonds Inc., Los Angeles, California, August 6, 2012; Stockspring Antiques, London, March 14, 2012; teacups and saucers accompanied by four old labels from Harris & Co. Antiques and Fine Arts, Liverpool, established 1821.
  • Notes: The pattern is documented as no. 298 in the factory pattern books, having a rich cobalt blue ground border and oval "India Work," most often compared to Yeo dessert service. Reference: Geoffrey Godden, Chamberlain Worcester Porcelain, col. pl. XI for similar dishes from the Yeo service. "The crest found on the dish is that of the Baillie family of Dochfour, Inverness County, Scotland. The monograph ("JB") is that of the gentleman who ordered the dessert service, most likely James Baillie (1744-1828), Esq., of Bedford Square, London (his last will and testament proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1828). James Baillie married in 1784, Catherine Gordon, daughter of Robert Gordon of Halkead, Aberdeen County, a granddaughter of the 2nd Earl of Aberdeen. He had extensive mercantile interests in the West Indies, as did many members of the Baillie family." - an excerpt from a correspondence between Wayne Cox and Stockspring Antiques, London, March 22, 2012. Wayne Cox later identifies that James Baillie (1737-1793), Esq., of Bedford Square, London, and Ealing Grove Middlesex, is the subject, together with his wife and four young children, of a well-known portrait by Thomas Gainesboro (1727-1788), which is found in the Tate Collection. The late Baron Burton of Rangemore and Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, Michael Evan Victor Baillie (1924-2013), was a descendant of Dochfour. The four teacups and saucers with an envelope of old paper labels.
  • Condition: Compote with an approximate 1" firing crack on the underside of the foot. Light scratches and rubbing to applied gilt and polychrome. Some stacking wear to platters, glaze crazing, and the rim of smaller oval platter is slightly misshapen. This is an assembled tea set. One saucer with small star crack to the back. Saucers are unmarked and have repairs reported as fills to chips on rims, conservation to joins, three for food use, including repairs to one saucer having a crack to side and not for food use. Repairs done by Art Restorations, Inc., Conservators of Fine Art, Dallas, Texas, August 18, 2011.
