A METTLACH PEWTER MOUNTED AND POLYCHROME ENAMELED STONEWARE STEIN, "LEGAL BOOKS" PATTERN, 1/2 LITER, IMPRESSED MARKS AND NUMBERS, CIRCA 1893, of traditional form and sides centering a continuous row of various law book spines in shallow relief, within blue enameled base and mouth rims, impressed " 1/2 L," surmounted by domed hinged lid painted and gilt with a scale suspended from a blue sheathed sword and balancing a crown and German hat, partitioning Latin inscription, "FIAT JUSTI TI A PER: MVN," enclosed within a conforming pewter rim engraved, "Alb. Kornmeyer s/c Fr. Antoni y.fr. Erg. Sommer 93.," beneath a scrolling leafy branch cast thumbpiece mount on an arched blue enameled handle, above an underside with impressed building logo and "METTLACH" banner / Villeroy & Boch monogram / GFGEN NACHBILDUNG / GESCHUTZ / 2001 / 10 91," overglaze handwritten gilt numbers, "23." and a black stenciled "A."
