A PAIR OF FRENCH NEOCLASSICAL STYLE GILT AND PATINATED BRONZE SEVEN LIGHT CANDELABRA, BY FERDINAND BARBEDIENNE, 19TH CENTURY, each with two tiers of ormolu acanthus wrapped square form branches ending in disc bobèches, surmounted by urn-shaped nozzles with lappet panel banding and surrounding a central vertical standard topped by a matching nozzle fitted with an en flambeau finial, supported by a patinated bronze vase after Claude Michel Clodion with crossed horn beastly mask cast handles, above sides of a Greek priestess and attendants making offerings at an altar in shallow and deep relief, over a bronze circular socle within a conforming foliate modeled border, on a rouge griotte marble square form base with fluted cavetto on a berried laurel trimmed plinth and curling tendril cast paw feet, each engraved "F. BARBEDIENNE." Height: 32 3/4" Width: 11" Depth: 12" Note: Ferdinand Barbedienne (French 1810-1892) a Parisian fondeur known throughout the world for his fine quality of castings in bronze and other metals during the late 19th century. Claude Michel Clodion (French 1738-1814) was one of the most celebrated of 18th and early 19th century French sculptors and one of the most copied. The vase reproduced for these candelabras is almost identical to the original that Clodion carved, signed and dated 1766 in white marble while living in Rome. The original marble vase can be found today at the Art Institute of Chicago European Paintings and Sculpture Gallery 217, reference number 1987.55. Provenance: Private Collection, Galveston, Texas
- Condition: Good condition with expected surface buildup throughout, the corners of the griotte marble base have been restored and there are some small scattered spots probably from dripping wax.
