GEORGE NELSON (American 1908-1986) NELSON PLATFORM BENCH, 20TH CENTURY, of rectangular form and a seat with evenly spaced finger joined birch slats, on tapering open box form stained wood legs. Height: 14 1/8" Width: 72 1/4" Depth: 18 1/2" NOTE: George Nelson was a respected 20th century furniture designer as well as a teacher, writer and editor for Architectural Forum. Many of his designs became virtually iconic, such as this platform bench, which he designed in 1946 and is still manufactured by Herman Miller. His work utilized quality of design, materials and construction, setting a standard that represents some of the best furniture produced during the third quarter of the 20th century. Nelson studied architecture in Rome, influenced by European 20th century furniture
