Mathias Ginsbach (French 19th Century) A LOUIS XVI STYLE ORMOLU MOUNTED THUYA BURL, ROSEWOOD, TULIPWOOD AND AFROMOSIA INLAID BONHEUR DU JOUR, 1870-1900, in the Neoclassical taste, the stepped crown within pierced three quarter galleried sides, over a breakfront frieze, above three, inset wide beveled, mirrored doors, the outermost two doors opening to shelves that lift to reveal twelve pop out secret drawers, the center door opens to a shelf over a single concave drawer, surmounting a parquetry inlaid breakfront writing surface, with square cookie corners, and relief leaf and berry ormolu mounted edge, over three breakfront drawers, each opening by the push of concealed button, the center drawer pulling open to an inset light brown, tooled velvet writing surface, backed by a fitted black lacquered pen and ink compartment, the writing surface pushes back and lifts open to a vanity mirror and storage space, the whole raised on Corinthian style, ormolu mounted stop fluted, tapered column legs with applied garland swag and wreaths, terminating in turned tapered feet with leaf form sabots, ending in a ball foot, joined by a concave, "X" form stretcher shelf, centering a raised, square plateau, stamped, "Ebenisterie, Tapisserie, Literie Ginsbach Freres, 5 Rue de Charonnes, Paris" Height: 58" Width: 45 1/2" Depth: 24" NOTE: Champier, Victor, ed., "Revue des Arts Decoratifs," A. Quantin, publisher, Paris, 1882-1883. Records a medailles d'argent (silver medal) awarded to Ginsbach. Paul Sormani also took home a silver medal in this competition; the two cabinet makers bested by none other than Emanuel Zwiener in the Class V furniture competition that year.
