Description:

WILLIAM HENRY DETHLEF KOERNER (American 1878-1938) A DRAWING, "Riding Herd," EARLY 20TH CENTURY, charcoal and graphite on paper, signed L/L, "W.H.D. Koerner;" 8 1/2'' x 11 1/2''. Note: Also known as Wilhelm Heinrich Detlev Körner, and sometimes just as "Big Bill," Koerner was born in Prussia, but his family immigrated to Iowa when he was three years old. He started out doing illustration work for newspapers and in 1902 he created the short-lived Hugo Hercules comic which is considered to be the first superhero comic. In 1919 he was commissioned by the Saturday Evening Post to illustrate two articles with Western themes. This captured his imagination and the West became the principal source of his inspiration for the rest of his career. More recently, his painting A Charge to Keep was used as the cover illustration for the biography by the same name by former President George W. Bush and hung in the Oval Office during his presidency.
