Lot 188
A BELLMAN & IVEY RED SCAGLIOLA PEDESTAL, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY, modeled as a doric column with a smooth stem, the capital centering a round porcelain plaque marked "BELLMAN & IVEY/To The Queen/Scagliola Marble" over "Prize Medals" flanked by the dates "1851" and "1862" above "Manufacturers/95.Wicmore St/W/London," on a square ebonized wood base. NOTE: A virtually identical pedestal, save for the base, was offered at Bonham's, The Henley Sale,19 July 2008, Lot 707 for $950-$1,300. Vincent Bellman (1796-1860) and John Ivey (1796-1860) were acclaimed manufacturers of plaster and cement reproductions of works by prevalent British, Italian, and French sculptors. The firm went by the name Bellman & Ivey from the time it was established in 1861 until 1892, when a partnership with a prominent London dealer formed the Bellman, Ivey & Carter Sculpture Gallery. An advertisement (of which they had many) states that the firm is to be credited for "The Architectural Screen, exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and for which a Prize Medal was awarded" (The Art Journal, v10, Virtue: 1861). There is much literature on the firm's successful history, initially working as a plasterer and scagliola manufacturer, then suppliers of marble sculpture and pedestals (holding a warrant by appointment to Queen Victoria from at least 1885, and to Edward VII from 1901, and subsequently to George V), and later sculpture cleaners for the National Portrait Gallery between 1902 and 1919. Special thanks to the London Gallery Project, Royal Collection Trust, The Exhibition Culture In 19th Century London Project at the University of Glasgow, and the National Portrait Gallery of London. Height: 38 1/2" Width: 15 3/4" Depth: 15 1/2"
