Description:

A BRONZE SCULPTURE, "The Dying Gaul," AFTER THE ANTIQUE, PROBABLY ITALIAN, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY, nicely cast with realistic details throughout on an oval base, natural bronze with no patination. NOTE: This iconic ancient Roman sculpture was originally discovered in marble during an excavation of an Italian site dating from the 1st Century A.D. Before being exhibited, sculptors would customarily repair and carve lost parts, thereby "completing" the sculpture. After its discovery and placement in a public or private collection, foundries would often cast reproductions in bronze and sometimes in cast iron or spelter metal for tourists making their "Grand Tour." Height: 5 5/8" Width: 11 3/8" Depth: 5 3/4"
