ink on cream wove paper, containing a special map of the Rio Grande, "Map of the County Adjacent to the Left Bank of the Rio Grande below Matamoros," surveys under instructions from J.J. Abert Corps of Topographical Engineers, made by Lieut. J.D. Webster, Je., assisted by T.E. Mulloway, Esq.," from 1847, a lithograph of Sarony, New York, showing the southernmost point of Texas at Brownsville, the text printed in New York by Pudney & Russell, No. 79 John-Street, twenty-three pages discussing the navigability and commercial usage of the mouth of the Rio Grande, compiled in response to, "An article (that) was published in the official paper at Washington City, 'The Republic,' republished in the New-York Tribune of the 22nd October, and The Commercial Advertiser of the 29th, headed the 'Exploration of the Rio Grande...," the report, "...gives us gratifying intelligence, that the Rio Grande, at a very small outlay, can be rendered navigable for upwards of 1,400 miles from its mouth, and informs us several towns already established upon the banks of the river...," including a reprinted response from Sam Houston, covered in green gilt embossed leather and marbled boards. 9 1/2" x 6"

  • Provenance: Collection of Hubert Hudson, Texas Senator 1957-1963, Brownsville, Texas; Mount Pleasant Academy Library, purple stamp.
  • Condition: Apparent age, foxing spots, stains, acid burning at edges, soil, small damages to text, map in more distressed condition having apparent tears, lacerations at folds, some linen tape applied, all consistent with age and use of materials. Penicl inscriptions intermittently throughout.
