A DUTCH ROSEWOOD, MAHOGANY, AND EBONIZED WOOD "KUSSENKAST" (CUSHION CABINET), PROBABLY AMSTERDAM, CIRCA 1650-1700, of overall rectangular form, the collapsable cabinet of mortise and tenon construction on an oak carcase, the projecting bonnet with stacked rosewood veneered bolection mouldings separated by ripple carved ebony filets, over ebonized pearwood bolection moulding with carved corner blocks with winged cherubs flanking a lion's mask centering a carved lion's mask, with carved lion's masks at the two rear corners, over a rosewood band, the front with an appliqued carved mahogany frieze of scrolling acanthus leaves anchored by phoenix birds and winged cherubs supporting a shield form armorial crest, with two projecting canted mahogany banded ebonized pearwood columns with faux grained cast capitals with projecting female heads over acanthus leaves, a sliidng mechanism revealing the keyhole, and quarter engaged columns at the rear corners, the two door front with vertically oriented rectangular "cushions" in rosewood veneer with rippled carved ebony filet frame, the center of each cushion with applied carved mahogany carving with acanthus scrolls, floral blossoms, and nuts hung on ribbons, over two drawer base with carved winged cherub pulls, the whole raised on three ebonized pearwood compressed ball feet, the interior fitted with three shelves. Height: 86 1/2" Width: 86" Depth: 39 3/4" NOTE: The creation of large cabinets for the storage of precious household items such as linen's and silver proliferated in Holland during the middle to late 17th century. Reflecting the economic status of the owner, cabinets could run from simple painted wood examples to those incorporating rare and exotic woods and based on rich architectural forms such as this example. Known as a "kas" or "kast" contemporary paintings by Dutch artist's record the amazing richness and grandeur of these rare and valuable cabinets.

  • Condition: In overall good refinished and previously restored condition, with minor areas of veneer lifting and loss as well as surface wear and rubbing commensurate with age and use.
