A FINE PRE-COLUMBIAN MAYAN COPAN POLYCHROME CHIEF BOWL, LATE CLASSIC PERIOD, 600-900, the sides painted with a continuous scene of seated twins each holding his hand out in an offering gesture expelling scrolls, wearing beaded pectoral necklace, the interior painted with a row of large band of floral motifs raised on ribbed base. Height: 3 1/2" Diameter: 9" NOTE: The figures on the exterior are representing the Hero Twins, Xabalanqué and Huanhpú, who are central characters in the Mayan document, "Popol Vuh." Their mother was a goddess of the Mayan underworld Xibalba, their father and uncle were sacrificed after losing a ball game in Xibalba. The twins revenge their father's death by traveling to the underworld and winning a game and in the process reviving their father. Provenance: Former Miami Collection of C. Cohen.
