Description:

A FRAMED FLEMISH COPPER PLATE CARTOGRAPHIC ENGRAVING AFTER ABRAHAM ORTELIUS (1527-1598), "AENEAE TROJANI NAVIGATIO AD VIRGILII SEX PRIORES AENEIDOS," ANTWERP, 1603, an example of an unusual "literary" map from the Latin edition of the compilation of historical maps known as the Parergon, part of Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Here is a wonderfully decorated tribute to the legend of the seven years of travel by legendary hero Aeneas after the destruction of Troy as recounted by the irreverent Roman poet Virgil in his epic Aeneid, written between 29-19 BC, featuring elegantly inscribed calligraphy of select verses from Book One of the Aeneid, as well as a dedication to Balthasar de Robiano (1553-1618), treasurer and mayor of Antwerp at the time. NOTE: A few points of interest: At the coast of Asia Minor the word "Antandros" is inscribed, meaning the point of Aeneas' embarkment, and the west coast of Sicily is labeled "Cyclopes" meaning home of the cyclops. Height: 13 1/4" Width: 19 1/2"
