A GEORGE II STERLING SILVER SALVER, WITH ARMORIAL, MARK OF HUMPHREY PAYNE, LONDON, CIRCA 1732,
circular platter with scalloped rolled edges centering an armorial, Arms of Sir Narborough D'Aeth, 2nd Baronet, of Knowlston, Kent, comprised of quarterly 1 and 4 (Sable), a Griffin passant (or) between three Crescents (Argent), 2 and 3 Gules a Chief Ermine (Narborough), and at fess point on an inescutcheon Argent a sinister Hand erect couped at the Wrist Gules (Badge of Ulster), impaling the arms of his wife, Anne Clarke, Argent on a Bend Gules between three Torteaux as Many Swans Argent; diameter: 11 1/4", approximate weight: 807 grams.

  • Provenance: Collection of Katherine Pitcher, Leonardtown, Maryland; Wayne Cox, Abilene, Texas; Sotheby's, European Ceramics, Silver & Vertu, Auction no. W05731, lot 272, Olympia, London, April 12, 2005.
  • Notes: Humphrey Payne (1716-1773) silversmith working in London, active 1701-1750s. Narborough D'Aeth married Anne, daughter of John Clarke, of Blake Hall, Bobbingworth, Essex, on 5 January 1737 at St. Olave, Hart Street, London. He succeeded to Baronetcy at the death of his father, Sir Narborough D'Aeth, on April 4, 1745. Anne D'Aeth was the heraldic heiress of her brother, Richard Clarke of Blake Hall, Bobbingworth. The armorial ensigns were engraved on the silver salver between 1745 and 1770. Their son Sir Narborough D'Aeth, of Knowlton died unmarried in April 1808 when the Baronetcy became extinct.
