- Provenance: Collection of Katherine Pitcher, Leonardtown, Maryland; Wayne Cox, Galveston, Texas; Bonhams, lot 839, Edinburgh, Scotland, March 24, 2011; Descendants of St. George Cuff (James Cuff's brother), Elizabeth Gardiner (James Cuff's second sister), wife of John Gardiner, and other sister, see James Cuff's last will, 1828; Harriet Caulfeild, wife of Lt. Col. James Cuff, 1828-1842.
- Notes: Unable to inherit his grandfather's peerage. Lt.-Col. James Cuff (1780-1828) was the son bore to Lord Tyrawly, who was made a Baron Tyrawly of Ballinerobe in the County of Mayo, created November 7, 1797. James Cuff was born to Baron Tyrawly and his second wife, sometimes documented as his mistress Wewitzer, a London actress. Found in "The Gentleman's Magazine: and Historical Chronicle from July to December 4, 1821, Vo. XCI, part the second, London, printed by John Nichols & Son, sold by John Harris & Son (successors to Mrs. Newberry), Hamburg, 1821; the publication stating that though James Cuff was the great-grandson of the Right Hon. Sir James Cuff, knt. M.P. for the county of Mayo granted in 1661 by Charles II; the peerage became extinct due to the fact that he was a bastard. The king declining his petition for peerage recognition despite being brought to his attention by Lord Cornwallis, in a correspondence between Marquis Cornwallis to the Duke of Portland. James Cuff inherited the estates of his father but never the peerage title. It has been suggested that the present dessert service was purchased on a shopping spree following the death of his father Lord Tyrawly in the 1820s.
