A GEORGE NAKASHIMA (American 1905-1990), FREE EDGE WALNUT PLANK HEADBOARD, MID 20TH CENTURY, created from a single boldly grained plank of walnut. This exceptional full size headboard was designed by Nakashima in 1967 and is an impressive example of his early woodworking techniques, featuring an irregular sap hole fissure to the left of a natural knot hole. NOTE: A closely related cherry wood headboard by Nakashima sold at Christie's New York, Twentieth Century Decorative Arts Sale, 6 December 2001, Lot 227 for $17,625; and a walnut one, though not quite as characteristic, was offered at Sotheby's New York, Contemporary Living Sale, 22 July 2015, Lot 178 for $7,000-$9,000.
