A GERMAN HAND PAINTED SATINWOOD BABY GRAND ART PIANO, BY EMIL ASCHERBERG, DRESDEN, LATE 19TH CENTURY, of traditional form and a hinged lid with a leaf tip detailed border centering a hand painted scene of a classically attired young couple resting amidst a romantic garden before an amusing fountain of frolicking putti within trailing floral cluster borders, over a hinged flap having an oval reserve depicting an amorous youth and maiden shepherdess resting with recumbent sheep in a bucolic landscape, above conforming sides of ribbon-tied bows suspending blossoming garlands, enclosing a keyboard and pivoting cover with circular classical youth portrait bust flanked by flowering festoons, over a band of scrolling foliage and stylized anthemions alternating covered urns surmounting an oval painting of a bathing maiden and her partially robed attendant, flanked by similarly detailed flower decoration, covering interior harp with raised lettering "EMIL ASCHERBERG DRESDEN.," raised on paired tapering rectangular legs on brass casters. NOTE: Emil Ascherberg of Dresden is recorded as having made custom pianos in the late 19th Century during which time he exhibited at exhibitions around the world. His clients included the last Queen of Hawaii, Liliuokalani, who ordered a piano for her Iolani Palace in Honolulu which can is still there today. 1879 he exhibited at the Sydney International Exhibition where he also won awards. It was in Australia that he formed a partnership with James Nicholson in Melbourne, which was dissolved after 5 years when Ascherberg returned to Germany.
