A GROUP OF THREE VICTORIAN CRYSTAL WINE DECANTERS WITH STOPPERS, ENGLISH, CIRCA 1850-1880, comprising a globe and shaft form decanter, the shaft with three rows of staggered elongated oval slice cuts, the globe decorated with engraved bands over a passementerie style braid with arch linked flower heads and drops, with matching blown flat top stopper; a glove and shaft form decanter, the waisted form shaft with a band of slice cuts over diamonds continuing back to slices, the globe decorated with engraved fruiting grape vine, the base cut with a twenty-four point radiating star, with matching teardrop form blown stopper, height: 13 1/2", diameter: 5"; and another globe and shaft form decanter, the shaft with slice cuts, the globe with two staggered rows of oval slice cuts, the bottom cut with a sixteen point radiating star, with teardrop form faceted stopper. NOTE: "John Melmoth Dow was a shipmaster, shipping agent and naturalist. Born in New York City in 1827, he joined the Panama Railroad Company. He made his first voyage to the Central American coast in 1851, and remained involved with Central and South American coastal trade as a ship captain until 1876. He was appointed commander of the steamer Constitution in 1853, and opened the Central American service of the Panama Railroad Company as commander of the steamer Colombus. He later became a shipping agent for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. During his years as a shipping agent, Dow was captured and held hostage by revolutionist Pedro Prest án in 1885. He was arbitrator in the dispute between the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocéanique and the American Contracting and Dredging Company in their attempt to build the French Canal in Panama.   • Condition: The decanters in overall fair to good condition with surface scratching and wear commensurate with age and use, the stopper to the grape engraved decanter with loss to the end, same with the oval slice cut decanter.
