Description:

A JACOBEAN "BISHOP'S BIBLE" FOR THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND, NEW TESTAMENT, ENGLISH, 1580s-1610s,
ink on paper, translated from Latin Vulgate, the Bishop's Bible was meant as a "Pulpit Bible," considered the first "authorized bible" printed in English, and is best known as the bible translation used as the basis of the King James Bible, published in 1611 and ultimately taking the place of the Bishop's Bible, gilt tooled, leather-bound, spine marked III (tome). Height: 8 1/4" Width: 6 1/4" Depth: 2 1/2"

  • Provenance: The Printing Museum, Houston, Texas; "Charles Butler his book 1723", signed twice at end of Preface and end of "summer of the four Gospels.," attributed to Charles Butler, 1st Earl of Arran (of the second creation), de jure 3rd Duke of Ormonde, a protestant and Anglo-Irish peer; tenure 1722-1758; and a "Mister Raleigh", written in late 16th century old English ink manuscript in preface margin.
  • Notes: The present bible was printed during the reign of King James VI and I, and is generally considered a masterpiece of Jacobean-era prose for translating the bible into the common people's tongue. Used exclusively as the basis for the more commonly known King James Bible (KJV) that is still in use in the 21st century. The present bible introduces the word "charities" in I Corinthians 13, results from a 1572 revision, and mentions the year 1580 in the margin of the Preface, helping to date the present bible and attribute it within the timeline of over fifty revisions from the first version printed in 1568.
  • Condition: The paper has stray marks, ink stains, general wear, folds, small tears, losses, and yellowing. The Bible has no title page and the printing date is unknown. The cover has heavy wear, holes, and scratches.
