Description:

A LARGE GEORGE III POLYCHROME WOOL NEEDLEWORK FLORAL PANEL, LATE 18TH CENTURY, worked in colorful gros point and centering an urn filled with a profusion of flowering stems within an oval border of a leafy vine wrapped rod partitioned by foliate clasps, enclosed in a rectangular field of swirling blossoming branches and faded red trim, mounted and professionally set within a giltwood frame. Height: 35" Length: 80 1/2" Note: This wool floral panel typifies the type of needlework by titled ladies of the manor spread throughout England from the 16th through the 19th centuries. It is not unusual to find chairs, stools, pole screens and tables having been covered in needlework by the lady or her daughters as well as other visiting ladies as this was part of their routine and social life of the manor. By the late 19th century workrooms and machine looms had freed many from this but some still made smaller pillow covers or other type of small needlework examples for home and charity such as during war times. This example's good condition and size leads one to think it was possibly made to cover a table or large piece of furniture.        Provenance: Property from a Fortune 500 Energy Company, Houston, Texas.

  • Notes: Textile
  • Condition: Good condition for English needlework panels of this age, size and use including but not limited to faded throughout but still has strong colors, old repairs and restored areas, some loose threads and splits scattered throughout.    Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
