A LOUIS XIV BAROQUE MAP OF SPAIN, "Principauté de Catalogne ou song compris Les Comtes de Roussillon et ed Cerdagne," PARIS, 1696, hand-colored engraving on paper, Alexis Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712), cartographer, after Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667), with latitude and longitude lines, a title cartouche in the lower right resembles the later sculpted Marly Horses, the title modeled as two horse trainers, one dressed in Spanish and one in French costume reigning in horses rampant, a baroque flourish centers a garland wreath flanked ribbon bound feathers with berries, and acanthus scrolls extend from fruiting cornucopia at their feet pierced by spear flags, probably from a second edition atlas published by Pieter Mortier (1661-1711) of 111; the map with a mile chart with tombeau cap with classical cavetto edge waving with ribbons is in Italian, French, German, Spanish and by the candle or chimney hour, at left is the territory, "Confins du Royaume D'Aragon," bordered south east by Royaume de Valence, Viguerie de Tortosa, and other areas belonging to, "Principauté de Catalogne," "Comté de Cerdagne," "Comté de Roussillon," secured in the Treaty of Pyrenees in 1659, and in the north, "Frontier de France," a bold claim by the Louis XIV King of France regarding territory he demanded as part of his wife's dowry and had recently won in the War of Devolution fought 1667-1668, and finally at the mouth of River Llobregat, Mont Louis, a citadel fortification designed by french military engineer Sébastien le Prestre de Vauban (1633-1707). 25 3/16" x 37 3/4"

  • Condition: Some minor expected fading, handling crases, some tone, pencil inscription in margin, "Spain," a partial ink manuscript 4 in upper right margin appears also trimmed, some foxing and surface soil, overall in good condition, wear commensurate with age.
