A LOUIS XVI ROCOCO SILVER AND ROSEWOOD COFFEE POT, ATTRIBUTED TO MASTER SILVERSMITH JEAN-CHARLES DUCHESNE, PARIS, CIRCA 1780s,
a single rose form finial tops a stepped, repoussé laurel leaf and berry wreath lid over a "marabout stork" shaped body draped with beribbon tied flower festoons flanked by a rosewood carved handled and a dolphin form spout with relief bead chain motif to a flat base, the base and lid marked; height 8 1/2", total approximate weight: 534 grams.

  • Provenance: Collection of Katherine Pitcher, Leonardtown, Maryland; Property of Mr. Wayne Norris Cox, Abilene, Texas, engraved with coat of arms (Cox), engraved by Agry Graveur-Heraldiste, Rue de Castiglione, Paris, June 11, 2003-February 2, 2004; Montclair Art Museum, museum acquisition no. 36.161, sold by Christie's, Rockefeller Plaza, New York, auction no. 1241, The House Sale: Mr. J. Krass, lot 129, sale date June 4, 2003 with proceeds benefiting the Acquisition Fund (lots 129-155), a gift to the Montclair Art Museum from Edward S. Whitney, Montclair, New Jersey, gifted 1936.
  • Notes: An entry on page 114 of, "The National Cyclopedia of American Biography: Being the History of the United States," volume XL, 1955, describes Edward Samuel Whitney as an attorney with a hobby of, "...collecting Georgian silver, and in 1936 he presented to the Montclair Art Museum a collection of one hundred pieces of Irish, Scottish, English and French silver from Oliver Cromwell to George IV, in memory of his first wife...Grace Antoinette Kerruish..." In, "French Master Goldsmiths and Silversmiths from the Seventeenth to the Nineteenth Century," from French & European Publications, Inc., 1966, the author notes that the overall shape of the presently offered coffee pot was titled "marabout" and popularized in France in the mid 18th century. Silversmith Jean-Charles Duchesne is recorded as a master silversmith in Paris in 1767 and living in 1793.
  • Condition: The base with museum accession number and various scratches and wear. Mild age and surface wear.
