Description:

A PACIFIC ISLANDER SEA NAVIGATION "STICK" CHART, PROBABLY MICRONESIA, 20TH CENTURY, bamboo, cowrie shells, pencil and twine mounted to board. 40" x 40" Note: The present example was recreated in the 20th century; the original use of this type of navigational tool, called a wappepe or mattang, by indigenous populations of the Pacific Islands flourished prior to WWII. Pacific Island sailing masters of the water used these rudimentarily constructed "water maps" as guides to anticipate oceans swells and wave patterns by which to navigate by canoe people traveling from one island to another. A nearly lost art and knowledge, examples, like the one herein, preserve Pacific Island's early history sea navigation heritage. The lines extending in an energetic burst; a sailor would have used his entire body to measure the upswell and currents. Considering the relationship of these ancient style "water maps," and carefully comparing the bursts of rhumb lines that overlay Dutch Golden Age cartography are a must for any mapping or sailing enthusiast.  Provenance: Personal Collection of Roy H. Van Horn, Houston, Texas
