A PAIR OF ANTIQUE ENGLISH NAVAL BRONZE CANNONS, POSSIBLY GEORGE III PERIOD, CIRCA 1790-182O, each with a tapering three stage barrel flanked by plain trunnions, with a knob shaped cascabel button before a shaped rectangular raised vent and ending in a 3 1/2" bore muzzle, enclosing a removable conforming wood plug, height: 8 1/2", width: 12 3/4", length: 43"; on a naval type bronze mounted four wheeled wooden carriage, including its wedge shaped quoin with knob handle, height: 16", length: 29 3/4", depth: 26". Provenance: By repute, formerly the property of Hugh Lowther (1857-1944), 5th Earl of Londsdale, Lowther Castle, sold by his heir and brother, Lancelot, 6th Earl on April 17th, 1947, as part of the contents of Lowther Castle which proved to be the largest English country house sale of the 20th Century. These cannons later sold again at a Christie's auction, May 29,1970. A similar pair of cannons sold Christie's New York, 24 - 25 January 2001, lot 458 for $14,100.
