A PAIR OF BALDUC FRERES (attributed) PATINATED METAL SCULPTURES, "THE MARLY HORSES," PARIS, FRANCE, CIRCA 1880-1900, the pair of rearing horses restrained by grooms based on the original marbles commissioned by Louis XV in 1743 from Guillaume I Coustou (French, 1677-1746) for the horse pond in the garden of the Chateaux de Marly, mounted on stepped rectangular black slate bases with inset patinated metal processional plaques, raised on gilt bronze feet to the corners, marks: "CHAUX-MARLY." Height: 12 3/8" Width: 9 1/8" Depth: 4 1/2" NOTE: This pair of sculptures, ensuite with a pair of patinated metal urns also offered in this sale, was originally part of a larger clock garniture produced by the Parisian clock makers Balduc Freres.

  • Condition: In overall good condition with losses to patination, several chips to corners and edges of slate bases, minor rubbing and wear to surface commensurate with age and use.
