A REGENCY CHAMBERLAIN'S WORCESTER ICE PAIL WITH COVER, TEACUP, AND PLATE, ENGLISH, 1800-1820s,
parcel-gilt, enameled, on a salmon-pink ground glazed porcelain ice pail with cover, the cover with dolphin finial, a pierced gallery lid, having a crest and motto, "Virtus Invictus Gloriosa" a Baden-shaped teacup, pattern no. 554, and plate, pattern no. 554, diameter: 8 1/2", two pieces marked in red, "Chamberlain's Worcester," and one with black mark, "Chamberlain's Worcester New Bond Street..."

  • Provenance: Collection of Katherine Pitcher, Leonardtown, Maryland; Wayne Cox, Galveston, Texas.
  • Notes: The crest of a man holding a torch is attributed to William Thomas Brande (1788-1866), from a bookplate, chemist, F.R.S., his father Augustus Everard Brande (1746-1834), was apothecary to Queen Charlotte and a naturalized British subject in 1784, in 1809, William Thomas Brande succeeded Sir Humphrey Davy as professor of Chemistry at Royal Institution, Published "Manual of Chemistry" and "Dictionary of Pharmacy of Malaria Medica." The crest likely originated in Hanover and has a Germanic appearance. Reference: Correspondence from Thomas Woodcock, Garter Principal King of Arms, College of Arms, London, February 14, 2011, to Wayne Cox. The crest and arms from the bookplate are described as, "Azure a man proper habited in a shirt and trousers Argent with turned over boots and a sleeveless coat Sable wearing a peaked Hat Sable with three plumes Untinctured and holding between the hands a Torch in bend sinister enflamed proper," in correspondence with Janet Grant, Garter Principal King of Arms, College of Arms, London, February 14, 2011.
  • Condition: The cover of ice bucket has a small fault to the glaze on the underside, slight pitting to gilt on the finial and handles, handles with chips to undersides, light surface scratching throughout.
