  • Provenance: Collection of Katherine Pitcher, Leonardtown, Maryland; Wayne Cox, Galveston, Texas; Barclay Galleries, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
  • Notes: Robert Abney (1748-unknown), Esq., High Sherriff of Leicester, 1777. Father to Robert Abney was William Abney (1713-1800), Esq., married Catherine Wotton (1722-1790), in 1743. The girl children of this marriage and sisters to Robert Abney bear the names Mary Clarke Abney (1746-unknown) and Catherine Clarke Abney (1760-1825). Robert Abney married Anne Bracebridge (1742-1793), March 17, 1770, and it is most likely after this union that this Wedgwood commission was placed. The arms of Abney are described, "...on a chief gu. a lion passant ag. Quartering the ensigns of Wotton and Clarke, viz. for Wotton, azure three martlets arg. and for Clarke, arg. on a bend gu. between three pellets, as many swans, of the field." I, published by Henry Colburn, London, 1833, p. 574.
