A RUSSIAN PARCEL GILT AND POLYCHROME PAINTED ICON OF THE VIRGIN OF THE PROTECTING VEIL/POKROV, POSSIBLY 19TH CENTURY, composed of two intricately detailed tiers in the Palekh style with vibrant hues of tempura and gilding on board, centering the Virgin holding her arms aloft and wearing traditional long robes while standing on scrolling clouds, flanked by various Apostles, Saints, and Church Fathers led by Peter, Paul and St. John the Baptist, beneath the onion domed cupolas of the Church of Blachernae in Constantinople, above hymnographer Romanos the Melodist, holding his hymn towards the Virgin, while the Byzantine Saint Andrew the Fool points out to his disciple Epiphanius a vision that came to him while praying in the Church of Blachernae, enclosed within an incised Pan Slavic lozenge strap work border.
