Lot 200
A SWISS GILT AND SILVERED ENGRAVED BRASS STRUT CLOCK, EIGHT DAY MOVEMENT, IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS COLE, LATE 19TH CENTURY/EARLY 20TH CENTURY, the rectangular silvered dial centering blued steel fleur-de-lys hands, on a delicately engraved stylized floret amidst scrolling foliate sprays, enclosed by a black Roman chapter ring and scrolling acanthus leaves cornered by shaped spandrels within a beveled glass bezel and a rectangular scrolling floral rinceaux detailed case, surmounted by an undulating pierced crest and suspension loop, reversing to a backplate centering a circular time-set handle above an integral winder, framed by a shaped folding easel; together with fitted red leather traveling case. NOTE: This clock is almost identical to those made by the English clock maker and designer Thomas Cole, the inventor of the traveling "strut" clock, but other clock manufacturers followed his successful lead and made their own closely related versions. The popularity of this model eventually caught the attentions of the Swiss, who later were known to make strut clocks for the English market.
