A THREE PIECE KUTANI PARCEL GILT AND IRON RED GROUND ASSEMBLED GARNITURE, SIGNED, MEIJI PERIOD (1868-1912), comprising a pair of finely painted vases each with flaring internal rims centering puff arched red ground panels with gilt scrolling vine details reversing to exterior diapered banding, above a stout neck with fan form reserves enclosing an intricately detailed Buddhistic lion alternating blossoming leafy stems, framed within gilt curling lingzhi foliage and mons beneath spread winged phoenix, above ovoid sides with large fan shaped reserves with a beautifully rendered hawk perched on the branch of an ancient pine before a distant mountainous waterfall and ethereal drifting clouds, alternating a nicely detailed scene of the masculine Marishi deity with hand raised and holding a fan while astride a wild boar before his smiling attendant composed beneath a blossoming prunus tree, partitioned by wave patterned fan style panels framed within similar gilt decoration and floral mons, over an inset ring foot enclosing an underside with iron red six character mark inscription, height: 13 1/2", diameter: 6 1/2"; the polychrome painted red ground Kutani charger centering a nicely detailed peacock strutting before his preening peahen, set amidst a lush garden filled with flowering branches of a cherry tree over blossoming leafy carnation stems and various floral species, verso red three character mark inscription, diameter: 12 1/2".

  • Condition: These three Kutani earthenwares are in good shape for their age, use and materials including but not limited to normal gilding wear, surface buildup and crazing throughout, one vase has old faint crossed hairlines on underside and an old kiln firing split on the rim.   Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
