Lot 332
A VIETNAMESE/ ANNAMESE BLUE AND WHITE CERAMIC PHOENIX FORM WINE EWER, 15TH/16TH CENTURY, Painted with underglaze blue details through-out and modeled as a stylized crested phoenix with a long neck issuing rows of billowing plumage above a handle of scrolling idealized tail feathers, opposite a gently curved spout with "S" form feather shaped bracket, height: 8". NOTE: this wine ewer was recovered from a shipwreck, and is fairly rare in consideration of what is generally found on these marine sites. Its decoration and rather complex form can be admired for being a fine example of the 15th/16th Century Vietnamese potters skill . Similar examples of this "phoenix" form ewer can be found in museums in Vietnam, The Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as private collections throughout the world. The discovery of shipwrecks with ceramic cargo in the paths of old trade routes through-out Southeast Asia, has helped answer and change historic information on Vietnamese ceramics. Interestingly, it has revealed even more so, how robust this industry was and how wide spread its product became - perhaps second only to China. Some fascinating research on the subjects of ceramic cargoes recovered from shipwrecks and the southeast trade routes can be found in the excellent introductory articles in the Butterfields two volume catalogues for the TREASURES FROM THE HOI AN HOARD, October 11-13, 2000. Condition - this ewer has very little encrustation, the majority having been successfully removed. Spout possibly has been professionally restored. There are some areas of discoloration, frits, to be expected, but overall the colors and condition are surprisingly good. In fact, better than an identical phoenix ewer (Fig 9, page XVIII) recovered from the Hoi An and exhibited in the introduction of the Butterfields catalogue.
