AN AMERICAN COIN SILVER NAUTICAL PRESENTATION GROUPING FROM THE COLLECTION OF CAPTAIN JOHN MELMOTH DOW (American 1827-1892) CIRCA 1855, consisting of a repoussé water pitcher marked "Jones Ball & Co., coin silver, Boston," with presentation inscription, "Presented to Capt. J.M. Dow of PMSS Panama by his Passengers on the trip from Panama to San Francisco. Sept. 1855 as a testimony of their esteem for his qualities as a Gentleman and Sailor," approximately 32.2 troy oz.; a pair of chalices marked Jones Ball & Co., Boston," one with repoussé corn stalks and the other with three potted flowering plants, verso a cartouche with monogram, "J.M.D.," approximately 15.7 troy oz.; and a footed floriform plate with chased chinoiserie flames and leafy shell forms, centering a monogram "J.M.D.," the foot marked "P.H.K.," within a diamond shape, approximately 17.13 troy oz.; together with a leather covered log notebook from shipping expedition in 1855, including hand inscriptions of day to day notes, debts, passenger counts, directional calculations and weather commentary attributed to the hand of Captain John M. Dow, height: 6 3/8", width: 4 1/8"; and a single page entitled, "Engineers Condensed Log Steamer Columbus from Panama...to other ports in Central America," identified as the first voyage to California for the Ship Columbus, height: 13", width: 15". (6) NOTE: "John Melmoth Dow was a shipmaster, shipping agent and naturalist. Born in New York City in 1827, he joined the Panama Railroad Company. He made his first voyage to the Central American coast in 1851, and remained involved with Central and South American coastal trade as a ship captain until 1876. He was appointed commander of the steamer Constitution in 1853, and opened the Central American service of the Panama Railroad Company as commander of the steamer Colombus. He later became a shipping agent for the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. During his years as a shipping agent, Dow was captured and held hostage by revolutionist Pedro Prest án in 1885. He was arbitrator in the dispute between the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocéanique and the American Contracting and Dredging Company in their attempt to build the French Canal in Panama.
