AN AMERICAN FEDERAL PERIOD STERLING SILVER CREAM PITCHER, BY THOMAS FLETCHER, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, 1815-1830s,
in the neoclassical taste, designed with rolled edge and relief bead chain mouth over a pinched neck above a bead and lamb's tongue pattern collar over a pinched collar with pronounced shoulders to a floral spray upholding a tapered socle on a circular foot with repoussé wreath motif, the handle with flowery spray and curled ends, engraved with monogram, "E.B.," and with motto, "Cave Grypem (beware of grief)," stamped at base, "T. Fletcher Philad.;" height: 7 1/2", diameter: 6 1/2", approximate weight: 451 grams.

  • Provenance: Collection of Katherine Pitcher, Leonardtown, Maryland; Wayne M. Cox, Galveston, Texas, purchased, December 6, 2014; Kunst Auktionshaus Schlosser, Bamberg, Germany, lot 1589, Auction 59 on November 17, 2012, with letter confirming the present pitcher is, "...from the estate of the family Bohlen and Halbach.;" an electronic correspondence attributes the present pitcher as likely a part of a tea set given to a Philadelphia bride, Emily Marie Borie (1811-1851), in 1833.
  • Notes: The descendants of Bohl Bohlen (1754-1836) are William Henry Charles Bohlen (1810-1862) married to Emilie Marie Borie (1811-1851). Bohl Bohlen is recorded as moved to Philadelphia from Amsterdam in 1782, where he founded an import and wholesale business. Through his son William Henry Charles from his second marriage to Anna (Nancy) Schimmel, he is an ancestor of Alfred Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach. William Henry Charles died in combat in the American Civil War. Emilie Marie Borie died in Paris.
