coin silver (.900) profuse repousse relief decoration centering armorial in cartouche, the crest of a dove wing expanded holding in its beak an olive branch over a shield centering spotted sable across Flory, or a crescent charged with a mullet for difference above an unfurling motto, attributed to the Delafield family, "Insignia Fortunae Paria (A Sign of the Odds of Fortune)," marked, "B. GARDINER" and "NEW YORK," at base; teapot height: 8 1/2", width: 11 /4", depth: 6 3/4", approximate weight: 1170 grams; sugar bowl height: 7 3/4", width: 8", depth: 6", approximate weight: 917 grams; waste bowl height: 6", diameter: 6 1/4", approximate weight: 563 grams; total approximate weight: 2647 grams.

  • Notes: Baldwin Gardiner (1791-1868) silversmith, silverware manufacturer, and fancy hardware merchant. The present set likely retailed by The House Furnishing Warehouse of Baldwin Gardiner or Baldwin Gardiner & Co., active 1827-1847, New York, New York. Edward Delafield (May 7, 1794 - February 13, 1875) American physician best known as an ophthalmologist, co-founder of the New York Eye Infirmary, and the first president of the American Ophthalmological Society, and from 1858 until his death president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York City.
