AN ANTIQUE MEXICAN HISTORICAL DOCUMENT, SEPTEMBER 11, 1865, A HAND WRITTEN LETTER FROM MAXIMILIAN I (1832-1867) EMPEROR OF MEXICO, CHAPULTAPEC, AND A PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINT, ink on paper, a correspondence to a minister discussing church repairs and political ideas of liberalism, signed and dated, with accompanying modern reprinted photo of the Emperor from the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division. Height: 10 3/4" Width: 8 1/4" NOTE: Born in Vienna, Austria, an Archduke, and younger brother to Austrian Emperor Francis Joseph I, Maximilian I of Mexico ruled from 1864-1867. He was a liberal emperor who faced considerable challenges due to political instability in Mexico. After the French Army retreated due to civil unrest he was left defenseless in Mexico. His wife, Carlota, the daughter to Leopold I, king of the Belgians, had accompanied him to Mexico, but shortly before his death had returned to Europe on a diplomatic tour to ask for assistance. His conservative constituents sentenced and later executed him June 19, 1867.

  • Condition: There are some holes noted in the paper, some tone noted mostly to the corners, and pencil markings in the upper right hand corner, otherwise in very good condition, wear commensurate with age.
