Description:

AN ENGLISH BAROQUE CARVED WALNUT AND OAK LIBRARY TABLE, 17TH/18TH CENTURY, the later rectangular top within a florette banded border above a deeply carved frieze depicting Joseph with brothers at the well, flanked by Saint Peter holding his key and Saint Paul holding his sword and book, before a right side long drawer, raised on floral stem detailed acorn and block legs joined by a reticulated stretcher of scrolling cherubs flanking a fruiting vessel. NOTE: The creation of the Church of England by Henry VIII and his subsequent confiscation of the Catholic church lands controlled by the Vatican in Rome, meant that interiors were often stripped of decoration considered too Catholic, and refitted to more Protestant taste. Sometimes remnants were repurposed into furnishings or other useful items, possibly such the case with this library table. Height: 35" Width: 46" Depth: 25 3/4"
