AN ENGLISH QUEEN ANNE MAHOGANY CORNER OR ROUNDABOUT CHAIR, SECOND HALF 18TH CENTURY, formerly a commode chair, the concave tapering solid crest rail leading to flat shaped arms curving to either side over the double back with two solid baluster form splats alternating three turned columnar stiles, the diamond drop in seat covered in later cream and pink floral fabric surmounting two prominent and dramatically shaped aprons, three straight supports heighten the rear while a cabriole leg supports the front corner, all ending in pad feet, accompanied by a modern gold toned raw silk covered throw pillow embroidered with a foliate bouquet of pink roses issuing from a stylized urn. Height: 31 3/4" Diameter: 28 1/4" NOTE: Often roundabout chairs from this period are of maple and, whereas walnut was the preferred wood in the Queen Anne era, later into the period mahogany became more fashionable. This chair is probably Caribbean mahogany which was being heavily imported to English around the 1770's.

  • Condition: Structurally sound and in good condition. General wear, such as scuffs, scratches, and age cracks throughout, as well as repairs and restorations as is expected for the age of the piece. The drop-in seat has currently been restored with modern timber to the underside. Further apparent restorations and repairs include one splat at its base, the central columnar stile, the front pad foot, and various others. All such repairs are appropriate and expected for the age of the piece. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
