  • Provenance: THE PRINTING MUSEUM, Houston, Texas, proceeds to benefit THE PRINTING MUSEUM, Houston, Texas.
  • Notes: The present new report appears political or diplomatic in nature, discussing the restoration and crowning of Charles II of England immediately after the dissolution of the English Commonwealth. Mentioning the death of Almerico d'Este, hired condottiere or military commander of ships for the Venitian Republic, fighting in the War of Candia (1645-1669), recorded as news from Venice in the present document as having died on December 17, 1660. Other news from Venice mentions that the French Ambassador had been taken prisoner by the Turks in Constantinople, surely including, "...that if he write any secret thing to his King, they will roast him alive." With reports of stolen sheep, followed by an advertisement for "Dentrifices" used to scour and cleanse teeth, "...making them white as Ivory, preserves from the toothaches so that being constantly used, the parties using it, are never troubled with the toothache...it fastens the teeth, sweetens the breath, and preserves the gums and mouth from cankers and imposthumes, made by Robert Turner, Gentleman, and the right are only to be had at Thomas Rookes, Stationer...in sealed papers...the reader is desired to beware of counterfeits." A long entry describes fighting at the end of the English Civil War and the "Good Old Cause" of the rebels against the English crown. On January 8, 1661, it is recorded that Sir Arthur Hasilrig died in the Tower of London.
  • Condition: There is no bindin and the spine side edge shows wear from previous binding. There is some minor staining, creasing, and general wear according to the age. One page has old marginalia in brown ink. One page has remains of archival hinges. There are occasional edits in ink.
