Description:

AN ESKIMO/INNUIT CARVED WOOD AND ANIMAL SKIN MODEL OF A HUNTER IN HIS KAYAK, 20TH CENTURY, built with what is possibly hand stitched seal skin stretched over a wood frame and centering the smiling hunter/fisherman seated in the opening and covered with his traditional hooded animal skin slicker, flanked by wood oars and bone tipped long spears strapped to the sides. NOTE: This type of boat is not unlike those used by the indigenous peoples of sub Arctic regions, such as the Eskimo, Aleut, and Ainu. These lightweight boats evolved over time, allowing the native hunters to search the coastal shores, rivers and interior lakes for wild game. The oldest kayaks are thought to be about 4,000 years old and variations based on specialized needs are used today throughout the world. Height: 5 3/4" Width: 28 1/2" Depth: 5 5/8"
