AN UNUSUAL JAPANESE IMARI MELON FORM LIDDED JAR, 19TH CENTURY, painted in traditional colors and gilt highlights, with a circular vertically lobed body, centering shaped reserves of trees with flowering branches above fluttering birds and blossoming iris foliage, alternating densely detailed flower filled urns, beneath a shoulder of quatrefoil cartouches and roundels enclosing auspicious blooms, surmounted by a short conforming unglazed neck with recessed cap of peony sprays surrounding a button form finial and covered by a similarly decorated domed lid, above a continuous base band of arched lappet panels framing a glazed underside with circular, "E & J FRANKEL COLLECTION" label, raised on a reticulated carved wood stand. Height: 9" Diameter: 7" NOTE: A virtually identical pair of this melon form jar was sold by Great Gatsby's, February 21, 2016, lot 978.
- Condition: Good condition, the cap having a small edge chip concealed by domed lid, small kiln firing hairline on the short neck and normal gilding wear in areas throughout.
