  • Provenance: Collection of Nicholas Lundy, New York, New York.
  • Notes: Anstis Lundy was an American painter known for her abstract compositions, often featuring bright colors and bold, gestural brushwork. She was born in San Francisco, California, and grew up in the Bay Area. Lundy studied at the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute) in the 1940s, where she was influenced by the Abstract Expressionist movement that was then emerging in New York City. After completing her studies, she moved to New York to continue her art education, studying at the Art Students League and the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts. Lundy's early work was characterized by a loose, gestural style, with swirling brushstrokes and bold colors. Over time, her work became more refined, with a focus on texture and the interplay of light and shadow. She worked in a variety of media, including oil paint, acrylics, and collage. In addition to her painting, Lundy was also a respected teacher and arts administrator. She taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and served as the director of the Art Museum of Santa Cruz County in California. Lundy's artwork was exhibited widely during her lifetime, and she was the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1972. Today, her paintings can be found in the collections of museums and galleries around the world, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
