ISAMU NOGUCHI (Japanese/American 1904-1988) AN ENAMELED CAST IRON ASHTRAY "OOI KOJO," FOR BONNIERS, NEW YORK, NEW YORK, CIRCA 1956, of organic triangular form with calligraphic decoration to both the exterior and interior, rounded mounded base marked on the bottom "BONNIERS, JAPAN" under three crowns. NOTE: This piece is one of at least two designs in cast iron commissioned from Noguchi by Goran F. Holmquist, President of the contemporary design store Bonniers in New York City. In 1955 Bonniers mounted the first United States exhibition of Noguchi's "Akari" lighting, which was followed by similar exhibitions in 1957 and 1964. Height: 2 3/8" Width: 6 3/4" Depth: 6 3/4"
