ISAMU NOGUCHI (Japanese/American 1904-1988) AN ENAMELED CAST IRON ASHTRAY, FOR BONNIERS, NEW YORK, NEW YORK, CIRCA 1957, of organic rounded triangular shape with cast calligraphic inscriptions over the surface, the mounded base bearing cast "BONNIERS, JAPAN" mark under three crowns to the bottom. NOTE: Around 1956 Noguchi began to experiment with cast iron, exploring it's properties under the guidance of traditional craftsmen in and around the city of Gifu, Japan. With calligraphic inscriptions serving as the background, this ashtray is one of at least two designs commissioned by Goran Holmquist for his Madison Avenue gallery Bonniers.
