JANEEN SCHISSLER (American) A PAINTING, "Mallard Hen with Downey Young," 1991,

  • Provenance: Private Collection, Deer Park, Texas.
  • Notes: Watercolor artist Janeen Schissler and her husband picked Loveland as the ideal place to settle partly because of its emphasis on the arts. Immediately, Schissler set up an art academy in the historic Bonnell Building at 129 E. Fourth St. Her focus is on instructing others how to draw and paint. She teaches eight classes a week plus two private lessons. Schissler grew up in Goodland, Kan. While in high school, she took art classes, but the teacher provided little instruction. Her formal schooling was under the tutelage of a master where she learned the basics -- the classical approach to art. She went on to spend many years in the Seattle area, taking on the responsibility of art director at a private school. She taught teachers how to teach art and quickly discovered that their schooling failed to include the fundamentals of drawing, color and values. Too much emphasis had been placed on graphic arts generated in a computer. Schissler sold her first painting in 1980. It was a watercolor of a ptarmigan sitting in the snow and was inspired by her Nebraska grandfather's love of birds. The classical approach to art Schissler explains is structured. She uses lesson plans which she wrote. Her students have responded favorably to the well-defined curriculum and have enjoyed seeing their own progress. Some students are semi-retired, while those who work take one of her two night classes. The results her students have produced hang on Schissler's academy wall. The solid foundation she provides allows them to continue with their own successful projects. Sources: AskArt.com; "Janeen Schissler takes a classic approach to art", RHreporterherald.com
