Description:

MICHAEL FRARY (American/Texas 1918-2005) A PAINTING, "Three Towers," watercolor on paper, signed L/R. 23 1/4" x 14" NOTE: After serving in the Navy during World War II and working as an Art Director for Hollywood's Goldwyn Studios, as well as Paramount and Universal, Frary moved from California to teach at Marion Koogler McNay's prestigious art school in San Antonio. In 1952 he became an Assistant Professor at The University of Texas and was awarded Professor Emeritus of Art and Art History upon his retirement in 1986. During the two decades he spent in Austin, Frary not only taught and inspired countless students, he also became a leading figure in the Texas-based movement known as Lone Star Modernism. This original watercolor by Frary epitomizes his revered style, combining Futurism and Surrealism with his affinity for technical drawing and architecture. Frary's work is celebrated on a national scale, with works housed in the permanent collections of many institutions, including: the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.; Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara; Springfield Museum of Art, Springfield, and others. Texas collections include: Dallas Museum of Fine Art, Dallas; The Grace Museum, Abilene; Rockport Center for the Arts, Rockport; and the Blanton Museum of Art, The University of Texas, Austin; among many more. Special thanks to The University of Texas Index of Memorial Resolutions and Biographical Sketches.
