MORRIS HENRY HOBBS (American 1892-1967) AN ETCHING, "Portrait of Merlin Valleau," drypoint on paper, signed L/R, marked "Ed/20," titled and dated "1945" L/L. 10 3/4" x 8 1/2" NOTE: Better known as Merlin, Mervin Valleau (American 1861-1942) was a forward thinking, some would say eccentric, writer and lecturer. Beloved by locals living in and around Lansing, Michigan at the time, he frequently preached his political and religious beliefs from street corners, amassing followers and admirers. In fact, Valleau was so passionate about politics that he chose to run for the 1861 United States Presidency on his own socialist ticket. He ardently believed that the consumption of raw and organic foods, as well as the acceptance and practice of nudity and sun exposure, would cure the world of disease, poverty, war, and aging. Special thanks to the Capital Area District Library, Michigan.
