Notes:
Rudolf Ernst was born in Vienna in 1854. His father was an architectural painter and as a young man he acquired an appreciation for architectural details and exactitude. Ernst trained at the Vienna Academy and in his last year he won a scholarship which enabled him to travel to Italy, Spain, Morocco, and Tunisia. The visit to North Africa would prove instrumental to his development.
Ernst settled in Paris in 1876 and began working in an academic style heavily influenced by Jean-Léon Gérôme. Like Gérôme, Ernst became captivated by the romanticism and exoticism of the Middle East and North Africa and he began practicing in the Orientalist tradition. Over the years, he trips to Turkey and Egypt where he observed locals and bought fabrics and artifacts to bring back to his studio in France. By the 1890s he was one of the most sought after painters in the Orientalist style.
"Harvest of Roses: Perfume Makers," is an excellent example of a painting by Ernst at the height of his powers. The subject matter is exotic without being pejorative. The surface of the painting is polished and smooth and the colors are bright and jewel-like. Ernst has paid particular attention to the treatment of different details from the tiles on the wall in the background to the fabrics to the pile of rose petals spilling across the foreground. The total effect is a painting that invites close inspection of it its details and fine color work while also conveying a mood of luxury and exoticism. -
