ink and manuscript on cream laid paper, number 29 in ink manuscript upper left, from José Antonio Fernandez, Governor of Tamaulipas, endorsed by Francisco Villaseñor, Secretary of State, copying "Ayuntamiento de Hidalgo," City Hall of Hidalgo, sometimes called, "The Infamous Pirate Decree," the present document concerns the organization and arming of the Texas revolutionaries on the eve of the Texas Revolution, mentioning the Mexican traitor José Antonio Mejia betraying Santa Anna by defecting to Texas, the articles are reinstating the earlier Mexican "Tornel Decree," that anyone entering Texas, possessing, transporting ammunition, supporting and organizing rebellion in the "Northern States" is to be treated like a pirate and are enemies of the Mexican government; the Republic of Texas was established March 2, 1836; 12" x 8 1/2", framed 22 1/4" x 18 1/4".

  • Notes: The present document is unrecorded in the Thomas Winthrop Streeter collection and Texana history text. In pencil, a note is left by a previous collector that the present document is "similar to #909," but not the same date. From The Printing Museum, "This reprint of the original December 30, 1835 decree stipulates that all foreigners in Texas who bear arms should be treated as pirates and shot. Santa Anna solicited and was granted the decree from the Mexican Congress for the purpose of deterring U.S. aid to revolutionary efforts in Texas. It is by this decree that Santa Anna enacted the massacre of James Fannin and his troops at Goliad. Samuel Bangs printed this broadside while he was a government printer in Ciudad Victoria.
  • Condition: Stains, yellowing, holes, wear and tatered edges, pencil markings, ink markings, early foxing spot, and apparent age.
