STEPHEN F. AUSTIN TEXIAN LOAN CERTIFICATE, SIGNED, printed document filled out in ink: "Texian Loan...Received of Alfred Penn Thirty-Two Dollars the First Installment on a Loan of Three Hundred and Twenty Dollars, made by him this day to the Government of Texas..." Signed by S[tephen] F. Austin, B[ranch] T[anner] Archer, and W[illiam] H[arris] Wharton as Commissioners on the Part of Texas. Broadside, printed on recto. First printing, printed January 11, 1836, the earliest date for any of the known Texian Loan certificates. Jumonville, New Orleans. Criswell locates a similar item (36A) which is from another typesetting. The Provisional Government issued these certificates to raise funds for the Revolution. They were redeemable for land at fifty cents per acre. The present certificate, numbered 523, is made out to Alfred Penn, authorized agent for Texas in the U.S., and one of the prime movers and contributors to the Texian cause. With triangular cut cancel at center restored, well away from the signatures. Height: 10 1/2" Width: 8 1/2"
